Week five: Body Copy continuance

Why buy local produce

1. Local produce tastes better and is better for you

Ditch the Tim Tams, the artificial, preservatives and saturated fats and grab a healthy alternative that will not only taste fresher and better, but you'll body will love you for it. Studies have shown that nutrients is easily lost during transportation from the farm to the Supermarket, where sugars turn to starches, plant cells shrink and the produce loses vitality. Produce grown locally shortens this trip, where most likely it could have been picked within the last day or two, making it much fresher.

2. Local food supports local farm families.

Consumers who buy directly from the local farmers cut out the middle people, giving the farmers full retail price for their food, rather than only 30% of the retail price, under the standard retail model, when sold through a Supermarket.  As a result farm families can afford to continue farming, and provide you with fresh produce every Sunday.

3. Local produce is the future

Harbourside Markets attract approximately 25,000 people every Sunday, where you will see students, adults and families turn up to source their fresh produce. Through supporting the local farmers, you can help to ensure that they will continue to turn up each Sunday,  thus preserving the Markets for future generations to have access to locally grown produce.

4. Environmental factors

As the popularity of the Markets increases, selling farmland for building developments such as Supermarkets  becomes less likely, where through buying locally grown food from the markets, you are doing something proactive about preserving the agricultural landscape. The markets are a temporary and portable event which can be set up in a local carpark or large area, where there is no need for a building development, thus saving money, labour and preserving land.
